SCHSL Reclassification for the 2026 – 2027 season
The South Carolina High School League has taken the first step to reclassify the schools in the state into new groups depending on the size of the student enrollment.
Many teams have had their classification changed as the state has decided to eliminate one of the 5A Classifications.
Over the last few years the largest schools in the state competed in two 5A Classification. Now the largest 40 schools in the state will be in the largest classification.
Proposed South Carolina Re-Classification
The new listing of school size shows Dorman as the largest high school in the state and along with the Cavaliers two other traditional Upstate big schools are among the top 6 size schools in the state
Byrnes has the fourth largest number of students and Boiling Springs is only a couple of hundred students behind as the sixth largest school.
One Upstate team not included among the 40 largest schools in the state is Gaffney. The Indians have dropped from the Division I 5A in recent years to the reformulated 4A Classification.
Proposed 5A Schools

We visited wtih TL Hanna Athletic Dirctor Tommy Bell who along with a committee, using a formula agreed to last year, is producing the playoff brackets for 5A DI, 5A D2, and 4A. Brackets for 3A,2A and 1A stick to an old bracket.
